From the Bible this week: Gold, Silver and Costly Stones

As Christians, we need to build using gold, silver and costly stones on a Jesus foundations.

Gold and other stuffLast night in Bible study, we were looking at 1 Corinthians 3, this chapter includes Paul’s spiel on divisions in the church. This passage also includes words that I had not paid close attention to before.

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work.

1 Corinthians 3:11-13

This is spoken about in the context of divisions within the church, saying that each person needs to be careful about how he builds his life.

We need to build our Christian lives on a foundation of Jesus. This means that whatever we do, we base it on him. In ever part of our lives we need to live for him, whether it is at school, or work, or home, or uni, or church or wherever we are. We need to live with our foundation set on Jesus.

To become mature Christians, we must build on our Jesus foundation, and how we build will be shown. If we have a strong building made of gold, then it will be shown by a reward in heaven (probably seeing the fruits of our work), and if we build weakly using straw, then that will be shown as well.

The most encouraging aspect of this passage however, is in these 2 verses

If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

1 Corinthians 3:14-15

No matter what, we are saved through what Jesus has already done for us, not through any works that we can do.

In thinking about this it reminded me of 2 blogs I thought I would share

From the bible this week: Jesus calms the storm

Nature is powerful.

This week I am giving a talk at WACT (St Stephen’s Willoughby youth group) on Jesus calming the storm.

Storm brewing

Jesus’ power and authority never cease to amaze me. The story of him calming the storm is one of my favourite miracles. Jesus and the disciples are going across Lake Galilee, when a massive storm brewed. This is a kind of weird concept on a lake, but the geography of Lake Galilee made this possible. I imagine it being something like this or this.

Jesus’ disciples were freaking out, so they woke Jesus. This is what Jesus did…

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

Mark 4:39

Jesus is the Son of God. He is God! He has power over nature, and he has power over death!

Jesus truly is amazing!

From the bible this week: Resurrection bodies

Open1 Corinthians 15 is a dense passage, so much great stuff is in there.

At church on Sunday night, we had a sermon about resurrection bodies, and it got me very excited. It also clarified some thoughts in my head, though there is still much to clarify.

One thing that I learnt is that our bodies at the resurrection will be physical bodies, and also somehow spiritual bodies.

So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44.

The physical nature of our bodies was likened to Jesus’ risen body before the ascension, which I found to be a helpful comparison. Jesus was physical in the sense that Thomas could touch him (John 20:26-28) and he ate food (Luke 24:42-43), but his body was also spiritual as he somehow came among the disciples when the doors were locked (John 20:19-20).

I look forward to the day when I have a resurrection body. If only that day would be now!

If you have any thoughts on 1 Corinthians 15, let me know below.

Surprised by kids!

Yesterday at Sunday school I was pleasantly surprised by two kids.

Firstly, a kindergarten girl had drawn a few pictures during the week and showed them to me at the start of Kidzone. The first picture was a picture of Jesus dying on the cross, and the second picture was a picture of an empty tomb and him rising from the dead. There was then a page with some writing on it that went something like this… (but not exactly)

Jesus died on the cross. He rose from the dead. Jesus loves everyone.

Wow. Such simple and awesome truths from one so young.Coloured Pencils

The second moment of surprise happened later on. I was not having the best morning and felt like the kids weren’t really learning anything. Then, when we were about to read Romans 5:1-11, a Yr 4 boy (who normally causes a bit of trouble) asked if he could read Psalm 100, his favourite Psalm! I was astounded.

God is good, and he is at work in this world through children!
