Blog Turns 100!

This is the 100th post on calumhenderson.wordpress.com! A pretty exciting milestone.

I thought now would be a good time to reflect on why I blog, read about that at About this Blog.

Here are the things that I said this blog would be.

  • Concise – most posts are around 200 words, and rarely does one go over 300
  • Positive – I think so, what do you think?
  • Regular – At times… more on this below
  • Colourful – Every post has a picture
  • God focused – I think I’ve done ok at making sure this blog glorifies God.

If you have been with me since the beginning, you’ll know that I was originally going to do this for 6 months, and then decide whether or not to keep going. Well, It’s been more than 6 months, but for some of those months I stopped. So i’m at least going to keep going for now, there may even be something exciting in the works… but probably not.

Thanks to all who have been reading!

Maybe I will…

I like blogging.

Over the past few months, I have missed it.

I have missed the reflecting and the active searching for new information to share.

Life has calmed down for me, I now have three months of holidays (though I have quite a bit to do). So I think I may have some time to casually blog.

I make no promises as to daily posting, but I will try to make quality posts when I do. I hope that I can share some helpful thoughts, and I look forward to discussion that will ensue.

Some things I may blog about include

  • Continuing the Public vs Private debate (with new thoughts and possibility of creating a resource for pre-service teachers)
  • 6 children’s talks I am writing for beach mission (on crazy stories from the Bible)
  • General reflections from the Bible
  • Thoughts about technology
  • Anything else…?

A photo uploaded to Posterous

So first thing to blog about… Posterous

I just started an account (here), after seeing Dave Miers use it. It’s pretty cool, and allows you to immediately post to Facebook and Twitter (and other sites).

It’s pretty easy to post, just via email or on the web. I think it’s better than Twitpic or other photo services, and it’s not just for photos.

Well that was fun. I look forward to this casual blogging, and will see where it leads.

1 Month Today

CalenderToday is one month since the launch of this Blog. In this continuative reflective trail (that won’t happen every month), I thought I’d share some stats, and see if I kept to what I said this blog would be about.

This blog will be…

  • Concise (generally less than 200 words)
  • Positive (on the whole)
  • Regular (more than I thought)
  • Colourful (always has pictures)
  • God focused (most posts are)

That’s how I’ve done on what I said, and this is what has changed.

  • Categories have been changed (now include Kids, Music, Life on top of the originals)
  • Haven’t really said much about Education tho…
  • Various new sidebar elements added.

Thanks for those who have been commenting on this blog, and thanks for those who have been saying how much they enjoy it.

4 Reasons to Blog

Blog 3As part of my continued evaluation of the blog, after a month, I have thought of a few key reasons why blogging is valuable. So here are the reasons that I have come up with so far.

1. Reflection

Writing thoughts down is a great method of personal reflection, having a blog has made me write stuff down that I have been thinking of, I have especially enjoyed reflecting each week on one thing that I have learnt from the Bible that week.

2. Discussion

Blogs are an excellent form of 2 way communication. I have enjoyed some great discussion on this blog, especially through “Mafia: Game of Sin?”.

3. Witnessing

Through this blog I have sometimes written things that aren’t directly related to the Bible, such as “5 Reasons to Tweet” and “Why use RSS?“. This has at times driven some random people to view this site, and some have even read my Testimony. I think if Christians are out there engaging with online communities, God will work through them.

4. Fun

It’s fun to write things, it’s fun to share ideas, it’s fun to share fun stuff. I really enjoy the experience of blogging, and if I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t do it.

Those are my reasons so far… I’m sure that they will change over time, and yes, I will share some reasons not to blog as well.

Do you have any reasons (to blog) to add?

Reflection in Ministry

ReflectionRecently I wrote an essay on metacognition and expertise. One of the major points that came out of research for this essay is how important reflective practices are in learning, and how much more effective we can learn if we build on what we already know.

This got me thinking about various ministries that I am involved in, and how much I need to reflect on what happens each week in order to serve God better. I think it is something that does happen a lot in many churches (and other groups), but I still think that it is something that needs to happen more, asking questions like…

  • How can we change what we did to make it better?
  • Was there anything that worked really well?
  • Was there anything that didn’t work?

So in my ministries, reflection is going to play a continuing role in me growing as a leader. So that I can understand groups, and how to serve God through teaching them (or interacting with them). I pray that others will continue to reflect on their ministries.
