Ignorance is NOT an Excuse Before God

A globe with a question mark over AfricaI recently heard this saying

Excuses are like armpits, everyone has them and they all stink.

Ignorance is one excuse that people try to use, or at least try to use for others. How many times have you heard somebody say, how is it fair that God will judge people in deepest darkest Africa? They’re never heard about him.

These people are saying that for people in deepest darkest Africa, ignorance is an excuse not to be judged. The Bible says something different here.

“they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness”

Romans 2:15

God works through people’s consciences so that even those who have not heard God’s law, have it written on their hearts. This is why people have an instinctive right and wrong.

So what does this mean?

“This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.”

Romans 2:16

God will one day judge everyone through Jesus, and it doesn’t matter whether you have heard it or not, God will judge you, and all will fall short of the perfect mark that he sets.

Thankfully, we can be perfect before God through what Jesus has done on the cross. So we need to follow Jesus and live for him.

“The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Mark 1:15

What about people in deepest darkest Africa? Let’s try to tell them about Jesus, and pray that they will be shaped by God’s law on their hearts.

What about you? You’ve heard about Jesus, it’s your move.

From the bible this week: Assurance

This week in small group at Uni, we were looking at Romans 8:31-39, another dense bible passage. The focus of the study was assurance. How can we be sure of salvation. Paul addresses that pretty well…

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

BackgroundWe can’t be sure of many things in this world (except death and taxes), but I think it is amazing how much we can be sure of God!

Through this passage, it is also clear to me how connected assurance, grace and election are. I have been called into a relationship with God, chosen since before the world (Ephesians 1:3-14). It is through nothing that I have done that this has happened, but only through what God has done for me (Ephesians 2:8-9). I can be sure of this, because nothing can separate me from his love.

It’s awesome that God is so merciful, and that he loves me!

Surprised by kids!

Yesterday at Sunday school I was pleasantly surprised by two kids.

Firstly, a kindergarten girl had drawn a few pictures during the week and showed them to me at the start of Kidzone. The first picture was a picture of Jesus dying on the cross, and the second picture was a picture of an empty tomb and him rising from the dead. There was then a page with some writing on it that went something like this… (but not exactly)

Jesus died on the cross. He rose from the dead. Jesus loves everyone.

Wow. Such simple and awesome truths from one so young.Coloured Pencils

The second moment of surprise happened later on. I was not having the best morning and felt like the kids weren’t really learning anything. Then, when we were about to read Romans 5:1-11, a Yr 4 boy (who normally causes a bit of trouble) asked if he could read Psalm 100, his favourite Psalm! I was astounded.

God is good, and he is at work in this world through children!
