“Church is” Project

Ancon 2011 saw the launch of the “Church is” project.

The “Church is” project is an interactive animation showing some people’s opinions about church. The project was submitted for Artcon, which is an art show that happens throughout Ancon (the SUEU’s annual conference). The “Church is” project was not a normal artwork. The only thing that was on display at Artcon was a small postcard with the question “What do people think about Church?” and the URLt for a website. The idea being that people would use their smart phones to visit and interact with the animation on the website, and then post their own views about church on Twitter using the #churchis hashtag. A cool idea in itself, however it was thwarted by the complete lack of 3G reception at the campsite, which meant no one could actually view the site.

This project was basically another excuse for me to play with Hype, which is a program that allows you to create animations and export them to HTML5. The project did not export perfectly, in parts of the animation certain elements do not properly align (such as the clouds). However it does play smoothly on an iPad, iPhone and computer (when there is an appropriate internet connection). I’m pretty excited to find other ways to use Hype, and I’m sure that you’ll see other implementations of Hype on this blog and other websites that I create.

Has anyone else had a chance to create an animation using Hype?

Thanks John! All done thanks to Hype. I’ve also made some banners to put at the top of each post in a youth group games series, see one here.
