I just experienced my first conference where a Twitter hashtag was used.
Hashtags are used on Twitter to group content together and make it easily searchable. This allows a group of people to use a hashtag to identify content together, and publicly share.
For a full explanation of hashtags, go here.
The hashtag used for the conference I was on was #runway2010. Follow the link to see all the tweets from the conference.
There were about 9 people using the hashtag, but I can see this taking off on future conferences, possibly with the integration of the hashtag in the conference via a tool such as TwitterCamp.
It’s great to have this ability as people can share what they have been learning from the talks, or share pictures that they have taken. And anybody can find and view and communicate with each other. I look forward to #ancon2010!
Below are some of the Tweets from the conference.
- whartonag Another amazing, life changing day on#Runway2010. God is at work in my heart, my life, in my friends, in the ed faculty and on campus!
- Katrina_katrina Hearts to love God: we need to trace God’s grace in every space. #Runway2010
- richardrglover Bringing #Runway2010 to a close. Praying for revival in the @sydneyunieu & at @sydney_uni in 2010.
- sydneyunieu #Runway2010 was fantastic! See you at#ODay2010 on Tuesday. Register online now: http://www.sueu.org.au/activities/o_day/
This post has none like it at calumhenderson.com

We used hash tags quite effectively at CMS Summer School this year. Looking forward to using it at Ancon.
Love it.
Thanks for the tweet ref Cal! I think there is massive potential for Twitter in conferences! My news feed was spammed from a number of Teachers (or tweachers as I call them) who attended a NSW English Teaching Conference a few months ago…they tweeted their thoughts, ideas, questions and their responses to the conference.
Whats next?
#Ancon2010 ? #Campus2010 ? Either way….#ourGodisgreat
@Matthew What was the hashtag for summer school?
@Justin Thanks!
@Alex Certainly looking forward to seeing how Twitter will be used in the future to encourage collaborative learning, I think runway was just the start for the SUEU!
@Calum It was #SS2010, which I’ve noticed another group has used since then. We used twitter at #SS2010 to relay info, answer questions etc. Worked well for everyone at #SS2010 who was there with an iphone etc, and for everyone who wasn’t but wanted to be, because they were getting regular updates on what was happening.
@Alex – #PM2010, #equip2010?
@Matt I sure do look forward to some future conferences to see how Twitter can be used for general communication.
I do however wonder how viable hashtags such as #equip2010 will be. Will enough people be using them? Or would it be better to just stick to #sueu, maybe even for conferences as well?
